Theme Explorer

Theme Explorer is an interactive scatter plot of musical moods and themes in the MTG-Jamendo dataset.

One way to visualize how these mood/theme tags relate to one another is to represent them in a 2D space of valence and arousal, where valence runs from negative to positive feeling and arousal measures how intense that feeling is. To map the tags into the valence/arousal space I intersected their lemmas with a list of English lemmas annotated with valence and arousal scores from Warriner et al. 2013.

Below is a static version of the map. Down is more relaxed, up is more energetic; left is more negative sentiment, right is more positive.

The diagram below gives a more nuanced look at how emotional responses are organized within the valence/arousal space.
